Formation of the Steamship Freshspring Trust (2013)

In 2013, recognising SS Freshspring’s historical and educational value, a group of enthusiasts established the Steamship Freshspring Society (now the Steamship Freshspring Trust) as a registered charity. Their mission: to preserve and eventually return the vessel to operational condition. The Trust aims to inspire interest in maritime careers and engineering among young people by using the ship as a floating educational platform.

Hull Repairs and Relocation to Bideford (2016)

By the early 2010s, Freshspring was in critical condition, partially sunken into the Severn mud. Thanks to a £155,000 grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, she was refloated and towed to a dry dock in Sharpness for essential hull repairs. In October 2016, she was safely relocated around Land’s End to her new permanent berth in Bideford, North Devon.

Wheelhouse Restoration and Deck Repairs (2017-2018)

With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Trust restored the deteriorated timber wheelhouse and carried out extensive deck and superstructure repairs. The newly built replica wheelhouse was successfully installed in 2018, preserving the ship’s authentic appearance while improving visitor experience.

Ongoing Maintenance and Educational Initiatives

A growing team of volunteers continues to carry out both aesthetic and mechanical restoration. Sustainability enhancements—including solar and wind systems—have been added, along with the replacement of missing heritage features and an event awning for improved accessibility. By 2021, a new mast had been installed and further hull work completed. Over 1,200 children have taken part in STEM learning aboard the ship, and public engagement remains central to the Trust’s mission.

Recent Developments (2023)

In March 2023, the SS Freshspring Trust received nearly £141,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This grant supports ongoing restoration and the employment of two new staff members, helping to strengthen the Trust’s operational capacity and educational reach.

Today & The Future

SS Freshspring is now open to the public as a static exhibit in Bideford on selected days. Visitors can explore both the deck and engine room on guided tours, seeing the original steam engine and restored fittings up close.

The goal is not only to sail again but to become a travelling ambassador for maritime heritage, inspiring future engineers, seafarers, and enthusiasts.

Preserving the past to inspire knowledge for the future.
