The Steamship Freshspring Trust is pleased to announce that SS Freshspring, the iconic heritage steamship based in Bideford, will reopen to the public on Sunday 13 April 2025, with Sunday openings running through to Sunday 28 September 2025.
After welcoming nearly 3,000 visitors in 2024, the Trust is aiming to exceed that number this year. Visitors can once again enjoy free entry on Sundays, with donations warmly encouraged to help maintain and develop the ship as a community and educational resource.
New improvements for the 2025 season
During the winter months, volunteers have been busy behind the scenes preparing the ship for the new season. Updates include:
- New interpretation signage across key areas of the ship, including the foredeck, master’s cabin, engine room, galley, and wheelhouse
- Essential health and safety signage, ensuring safe and comfortable access for all
- Fresh paintwork and cleaning, carried out by the maintenance crew and volunteers
- Restoration work on the wheelhouse, which is currently undergoing revarnishing
On Sunday 6 April, a team of volunteer stewards conducted a full spring clean of the ship—airing bedding, dusting displays, and making the bunks ready for visitors.
Family-friendly experiences
Children can enjoy the ever-popular Teddy Bear Hunt, while adults can explore the ship’s history and heritage through guided conversations with the volunteer stewards. Visitor data will also be collected to support future funding applications, including to the National Lottery.
Looking for new volunteers
The Trust is still welcoming new volunteers to join the stewarding team—either on board on Sundays or at off-site events. No prior experience is needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to engage with the public.
Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Mike Teare at [email protected] for more information.
A warm welcome awaits
“We’re so excited to welcome visitors back on board for another season,” says the team at the Steamship Freshspring Trust. “There’s always something new to see or learn, and it’s wonderful to see the ship come alive again each spring.”
