A Year of Growth and Engagement for SS Freshspring
2024 has been an exciting and productive year for SS Freshspring, with special events, educational activities, and strengthened community engagement. As a historic steamship of National Importance, we remain dedicated to preserving maritime heritage and inspiring future generations.
Opening the Ship to Visitors
This season, the ship welcomed visitors every Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00, offering free admission to celebrate Bideford’s Heritage Harbour status. This initiative provided a unique opportunity for the local community and tourists to explore the ship’s rich maritime history.
With wheelchair access to the main deck, we ensured an inclusive experience for all. Our Virtual Reality (VR) experience was a particular highlight, allowing visitors—including those with limited mobility—to explore areas of the ship that are otherwise inaccessible.
Special Activities and Events
Beyond our regular openings, we hosted a range of interactive workshops, including rope-making and Morse Code, which proved popular with younger visitors.
Educational Outreach
Our commitment to lifelong learning continues to grow. Sam’s outreach to local schools has strengthened community ties, with workshops incorporating STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), offering hands-on learning experiences in maritime history and engineering.
Volunteer Engagement
Our volunteers are the backbone of SS Freshspring. Weekly working days on Wednesdays saw a strong turnout, with volunteers maintaining and improving the ship. A new boat shed on the top deck marks the beginning of an exciting project.
The steward volunteer team has grown, supporting events both on and off the ship. It has been rewarding to see their confidence flourish as they take on new roles.
Looking Ahead
As we approach the end of the 2024 season, we are excited about what 2025 has in store. With continued community support, educational partnerships, and a focus on lifelong learning, SS Freshspring remains a vital part of Bideford’s maritime heritage.
