This spring, SS Freshspring Trust partnered with the Bristol-based organisation My Future My Choice to deliver an exciting and educational boat-building project for local schoolchildren.
The initiative, designed to spark curiosity about engineering, teamwork, and maritime history, engaged over 130 pupils from St Mary’s and Wheatcroft Primary Schools in Bideford.
The project kicked off in early March with a visit to SS Freshspring. A total of 136 enthusiastic Year 3 and 4 students stepped aboard to explore the historic steamship. Guided by our knowledgeable volunteers, the children learned how the crew once lived and worked onboard and were especially fascinated by the engine room. To bring the ship’s mechanics to life, a volunteer also demonstrated a working model of a steam engine—an unforgettable moment for many of the children.
Following the ship visit, the workshops continued in the classroom. Using precut wooden pieces and eco-friendly gummed paper, students worked in teams to build their own model boats. They then brought their creations to life by naming them and designing colourful sails. Each boat will be painted, waterproofed by Hugh and Polly from My Future My Choice, and made ready for launch.
The grand boat launch will take place at Victoria Park Paddling Pool on Friday 7th June at 3pm, coinciding with the Bideford Fair. The boats will be judged by a representative from the Burton Art Gallery, and a selection of the children's work will go on display at the gallery throughout the summer.
This hands-on project has not only introduced young people to engineering and teamwork but has also created lasting memories and connections to their maritime heritage. We’re incredibly proud of their hard work and creativity—and can’t wait to see the boats set sail!
